To Tread or Not to Tread...
To tread the path of righteousness can sometimes prove to be so lonely. More often than not, you are on your own. To correct a wrong is even worse. It is just not as inviting as we would hope so. More often than not, people would question your very motive. But what is there to question, when doing the right thing should be exalted, and not condemned. But in life's reality, especially in our system of governance, nay! in our very culture as a people, that is just how the ball bounces.
How can a wrong be right, when it should be that any wrong should always be wrong, no matter how you package it. Otherwise, that is compromising your very principles. So how is that right? To know what is right from wrong is a virtue in itself. But somehow, this is lost to most of us.
A friend is fighting a seemingly losing battle, for he chose to tread the righteous path. It is not a popular choice I say, for he is going against the majority. The majority - there was a time that I naively thought that the majority would always have the wisdom and the understanding of what is right. The majority, I thought, would always have the upper hand on knowing what is right, and doing what is best for all. But not to this, my friend. For you see, the majority is the problem. They committed a wrong, and they should be held accountable. But the struggle is uphill, for he is going against "the majority". My good friend committed himself to doing what is best for the people - to doing what is right for the people, and that entails, too, correcting any wrong committed by some people. And this is quite noble of him, for not everyone could put himself to task to go against those who you consider friends, peers and associates. But is it not ideal that we have this type of people in government, even how lowly their endowed position be? And is it not more so for the people who are holding positions via the mandate of the electorate?
This early, I can see frustration in my friend's eyes. I know he knows that this could all be for naught. But he is firm in his resolve to correct a wrong - it is after all his duty. And he is quite clear on his motivation that it is all about the wrong doing, regardless of personalities. And to this I say kudos! I only have admiration for him, for he refuses to put political color to it. He just wants to put on record that he does not condone a mischief, and that he is bravely willing to face its dire consequences. To this, I admire him even more, for not everyone is willing to go the extra mile to fight for what he believes is right - especially if it could well mean one's political demise.
Bombee Deocariza is a good friend - a lowly Barangay Kagawad from San Juan. We grew up together, went to school together, and at a time chose to serve our community together. I have long since gone to other endeavors, while he chose to stay put on this calling. He is now at a crossroad - to do what is right, or to remain mum for his convenience. He chooses the former, and to this I salute him. He just showed me and then some more that treading a path may be quite lonely, but to tread the right path makes it all worth the while.
So to you Bombee, just do what is necessary. We your friends have your back, as yours is the right path.
